D. Gregory Valenza is the managing partner of Shaw Valenza LLP. Greg is resident in the Firm’s San Francisco office. He practices in all areas of labor and employment law and devotes most of his practice to counseling employers, employment litigation and appeals.
After graduating from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration in 1985, Greg worked in hotel and restaurant management and consulting before entering law school. He graduated from New York Law School first in his class and received his Juris Doctor summa cum laude. While at New York Law School, Mr. Valenza was an articles editor of the Law Review, and received several awards, including moot court honors.
Greg serves as a mediator for the San Francisco Bar Association’s Early Settlement Program. He is a former member, Vice-Chair and Co-Chair of the California State Bar’s Committee on Legal Professionals with Disabilities.
Greg speaks regularly on a variety of employment law topics. He has authored and co-authored many articles on employment law, and has been quoted in numerous publications.
Before joining Shaw Valenza LLP, Greg spent 14 years with Jackson Lewis LLP, working in the San Francisco and Sacramento offices. Jackson Lewis promoted Greg to partner in 2000 and to managing partner of the firm’s San Francisco office in 2002.

Jennifer’s practice at Shaw Valenza LLP includes providing regular advice and counsel on workplace issues to numerous private and public sector employers. She also develops and presents seminars for management and non-supervisory employees on subjects such as respect and professionalism in the workplace, AB 1825 compliance, AB 1234 compliance, diversity, managing protected leaves of absence, and workplace violence prevention. In addition, Jennifer regularly conducts independent internal investigations for employers.
Jennifer is an active member of the California State and Sacramento County Bar Associations, and the Society for Human Resource Management (“SHRM”). She is a member of the Legal and Legislative Group of the Sacramento Area Human Resources Association, and co-authors a regular column on workplace law issues for The Daily Recorder, a legal newspaper.
Jennifer is a frequent speaker on employment law topics, and she has been a guest on CNN and local television and radio programs.
Jennifer graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz in 1988, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with honors. She received her law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1994, where she graduated magna cum laude and was the editor-in-chief of the law review.
Prior to founding Shaw Valenza LLP, Jennifer was a partner at Jackson Lewis LLP. Previously, she practiced employment law as an associate at Schacter, Kristoff, Orenstein & Berkowitz (1997-2000) and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (1994-1997).

Matthew J. Norfleet is an associate attorney in Shaw Valenza’s San Francisco office. He has experience in wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, reasonable accommodation, and whistleblower litigation in state and federal courts. Matt has investigated sexual harassment allegations, employee misconduct, threats of workplace violence, and fraud on behalf of employers. In addition, he has conducted numerous training sessions for employees and management.
Matt received a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in 1995 and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in 2000. During law school, Matt was Managing Editor of Hastings West-Northwest Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, worked for the San Francisco City Attorney, externed for United States Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero (N.D. Cal.), and was a law clerk for the Public Defender of Marin County. After graduating from law school, Matt entered the Honors Attorney program of the Law Department of the United States Postal Service, the nation’s largest civilian employer at that time. He was later associated with the law firm of Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold, LLP in its Employment and Labor Group in San Francisco.
Matt volunteers for the San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program as an advocate for minors in foster care and is an active member of Legal Services for Children’s pro bono attorney panel.

Alayna Schroeder is an associate in Shaw Valenza's Sacramento office. Alayna's practice focuses on providing training and advice to employers in all areas of employment law, as well as conducting internal workplace investigations. Alayna also has experience litigating wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, and other employment-related claims in state and federal court.
Alayna received a B.A. from the University of California, Davis in 1998 and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in 2002. During law school, Alayna was Notes Editor of the Constitutional Law Quarterly, externed for the Honorable Charlotte Woolard of the San Francisco Superior Court, and participated in the Workers' Rights Clinic at the Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center. Alayna graduated Order of the Coif and received numerous awards for academic excellence.
Before joining Shaw Valenza, Alayna authored and edited several employment and real estate legal self-help books and worked as an associate attorney at Farella Braun + Martel in San Francisco, where her practice focused primarily on employment litigation and advising employers. Alayna also has experience working in human resources and employee relations.
Alayna serves on the board of Asian Legal Services Outreach and acts as an advisor to the Sacramento Hmong Mediation Council, an organization dedicated to providing the Hmong community in the Sacramento area with culturally-appropriate alternatives to litigating disputes.

Alexander Sperry is of counsel to Shaw Valenza LLP. He is resident in the Sacramento office. Alex has significant experience defending employers in federal and state courts, and administrative/arbitral forums. Alex handles single plaintiff and class action claims based on a wide variety of employment laws. He also has presented seminars and written on a number of employment law topics, including equal employment opportunity, wrongful termination, preventing and investigating claims of sexual harassment, and employee leave laws.
Alex received a B.A. from the University of California, Davis in 1996, and a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1999. At U.C. Davis, Alex was a member of the Order of Omega Honor Society and president of his college fraternity. During law school, Alex externed for San Francisco Superior Court Judge A. James Robertson II, and clerked for the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
Before joining Shaw Valenza LLP, Alex worked as an associate in Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP’s Silicon Valley and Sacramento offices, where his practice focused exclusively on employment litigation and counseling.

Geoffrey M. Hash is an associate in Shaw Valenza’s San Francisco office. Geoff regularly provides advice and counsel to management related to employee performance management, termination of employment, reductions in force, executive contract negotiations, equal employment opportunity compliance, the protection of trade secrets and wage and hour matters. Geoff also has significant class action and single plaintiff litigation experience in these areas, including bench and jury trials.
For clients facing either union organizing, or challenges relating to the management of an already-organized workforce, Geoff also provides traditional labor counseling, negotiation, arbitration, and litigation services.
Geoff graduated from U.C. Davis in 1997, where he was a Hilda M. Sparling Scholar. He received his Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with honors. After working for several years in the restaurant and medical services industries, Geoff received his Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2003, where he graduated cum laude and received the Judge Harold J. Haley Award for Community Service and Academic Excellence. During law school, Geoff was also a member of the USF Law Review and served as the Symposiums Editor.
Prior to joining Shaw Valenza, Geoff was an associate at Curiale Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP. He is fluent in Swedish and proficient in Spanish and Italian.
